Back to St. Bedes

Anyone who has known Sight Concern for more than 5 years may remember our old home in the former convent of St Bede on Bromham Road in Bedford.

When we moved out on the 10th January 2010, we were expecting to return in about 18 months, following building work on the site. Instead, five years and one day later we finally returned and what a transformation!

In our absence, the entire site has been redeveloped into a spectacular housing scheme for people over 55, with 104 luxury apartments and supporting facilities. Nestled within this modern setting is the Victorian façade behind which Sight Concern used to work from its maze of corridors and little rooms. This too has been transformed by the site development team and although the façade remains, we now have a suite of modern offices. It feels like a fresh new start!

Our new resource room, from which we will also run the Bedford Low Vision service, is in the main building on the site, close to the café and main reception, and offers us a glass shop front’ to display equipment and information and promote our services as well as a small, private, clinic room.

Although there is very little parking on site, St Bede’s is a short walk from the train and bus stations so we’d encourage you to use public transport if you can.

We’d love to welcome you into our new old office sometime soon!
