Round The Moon

Help us travel the 6783 miles round the moon in aid of Sight Concern Bedfordshire.

I think that sounds attention grabbing and people seem to respond to the ludicrous nature of the idea. Don’t worry, we don’t want anyone to travel all of these miles by themselves! My hope is that the miles could be broken down by individuals (or groups) getting sponsorship for the miles they are doing. We can collate the miles being covered so we can keep track of how far we’ve gone and report that to keep people aware of the effort.

While it’s natural that many people will feel a special connection to the particular club, service or group that they are most familiar with and want to donate to that, I’d encourage people just to donate to Sight Concern Bedfordshire – to acknowledge all the wonderful things we do. I wouldn’t have a job without SCB, so maybe I’m sounding partisan but the money wouldn’t go in my pocket – it would be used to provide better services and support to blind and partially sighted people in Luton and Bedfordshire. Maybe that includes you.

I really hope that we can use this to promote SCB so more people know we are here and perhaps we can also help clubs and groups that are trying to build members or publicity at the same time. The Dunstable Club and the new Bedford Club spring to mind as just two that are trying to build themselves up and having some participation in this could help with all those things surely?

Of course, using this to encourage people to be more active is a great idea too. Maybe you could ask someone to sponsor them to walk the miles you walk every week anyway – whether it’s to the shops, or to work, or with the dog! We might be able to help people get pedometers (there are speaking ones available) so they can keep track of the steps (and miles) they walk every week and who knows, even start trying to do more. Walk a little further I mean. Maybe some people will want to start walking a little extra every week and ask for sponsorship for those extra ‘miles’.

Perhaps some people would like organised walks as a group and together they cover a certain distance – and get sponsored for that. Or maybe you would like help to do some extra walking (or running?) and that could be sponsored. We could do a sponsored tandem ride around the park or get some of the younger members from Family Group to do a sponsored toddle, and I’m sure that the older children would like to do something hideously dangerous.

However people chose to do the miles, these would be collated by our wonderful team of back room experts so we keep a record of how far we’ve gone as a whole. As we progress we’ll get an idea of how well we are doing and whether this is going to take a few weeks, a few months or a few years. So please let us know if you’d like to get sponsored for walking on your own, with a friend, or with a group or if you’d like us to help arrange a sponsored group walk somewhere near you.

With your help we may just be able to go right round the moon!
